In the past we have always called a + a
plus sign and a a minus sign.
It is important to understand that a
+ can be a plus sign or indicate a positive
number
Also, a can be a minus sign, a negative,
or mean the opposite of

Using a Chart for Adding
Ex) 5 + -2

Any one positive and one
negative adds to zero so we cross
them out.


What is left is our sum.

Using a Number Line
Ex) 8 + (-4)

Make sure the problem is an addition
problem.
Start on the first number and move in the
direction the next number indicates that
many jumps.

Pros and Cons
It is visual
It is easy to see + go right, - go left
It is easy to draw number lines so can be easily used
on tests and quizzes

It only works with addition
Large numbers would be a pain in the neck
Sometimes the signs are confusing (when to say
negative and when to say minus)


Using the Rules
Rule 1: Same signs, add numbers and
keep the sign.
Ex) 5+2=
5 and 2 are 7 and the signs of both are
positive so the sum is 7

Ex) -5 + -2
5 and 2 are 7 and the signs of both are the
same so keep the negative, the sum is -7

Rule 2: Different signs, subtract the numbers and
keep the sign of the larger absolute value.

Ex) -7 + 2
7 is negative and 2 is positive so subtract the numbers
(7-2=5) and keep the sign of the 7 since 7 is larger than
2. The sum is -5.


Ex) 10 + -3
Different signs (10-3=7)
Keep the sign of the 10 so the sum is 7.

8+6= 8+ -6= -3+-4=



9 + -3= -9 + 3= 3 + -4=
