9-6 Proportional Control 9-6 Proportional Control

Proportional control is a type of closed-loop feedback control where the output is proportional to the input. The proportional band is the percentage of the full controller range by which the measured value must change to cause the correcting device to change by 100%. Proportional control works like how most drivers control the speed of a car, where if the speed increases slightly above the target, the power is reduced slightly in proportion to the error between actual and target speed for smooth control.

9-6 PROPORTIONAL CONTROL

-the output from the controller block is proportional to its input.

9-6-1 PROPORTIONAL CONTROL BAND
-a type of closed-loop feedback control in which a constant value is
multiplied with the error in order to adjust the output. (gain and
proportional gain)
-is the percentage of full controller range by which the measured
value must change in order to cause the correcting device to change
by 100%

-proportional band is expressed as a percentage of full-scale range
of the controller:

%proportional band =

%proportional band = %full controller range HIGH - %full controller
range LOW

%full controller range =

Proportional control is how most drivers control the speed of a car.
If the car is at target speed and the speed increases slightly, the
power is reduced slightly, or in proportion to the error (the actual
versus target speed), so that the car reduces speed gradually and
reaches the target point with very little, if any, "overshoot", so the
result is much smoother control than on-off control.
