SYNOPSIS
Prologue A Forest in Spain
Wandering gypsies discover a baby alone in the forest and adopt her into their
family, unaware that she is really Paquita, daughter of the Duchess who lives in
a nearby castle. The Duchess, unable to find her daughter, blames the gypsies for
Paquitas supposed death and resolves that her other daughter, Serafina, must
always be protected from them.
Act 1 The Same Forest, 7 years later
The Duchess and Serafina enjoy a leisurely walk in the woods. Serafina discovers
an old cross, which, unknown to her, is a memorial to her sister Paquita. Hoping
to spare Serafina from painful memories, the Duchess hurries her away from the
place. Turning back, Serafina catches a glimpse of a young gypsy girl, who,
although she doesnt know it, is her lost sister Paquita.
The gypsies dance to entertain the villagers, and Paquita shows her friends her
most prized possession, a medallion with a mysterious coat of arms.
Later that evening, Serafina ventures into the forest and discovers the gypsy
camp. The gypsies welcome her, and soon she and Paquita are fast friends.
Intermission 10 minutes
Act 2 A Ballroom in the Castle
A grand ball is underway in the Duchesss castle, but celebrations are abruptly
cut short when it is discovered that Serafina is nowhere to be found. A search
party is quickly dispatched into the forest and soon returns, bringing not only
Serafina, but also her new gypsy friends. Recognizing the coat of arms on
Paquitas medallion, the Duchess realizes that this is her long lost daughter.
