Garudas greatness is spoken of in the Mahabharata. In fact, the core element of t
he Mahabharata story a bet gone wrong, with the losing side becoming subservient
to the winners is similar to the story of Garuda, elaborated V.S. Karunakaracha
riar, in a discourse.
Garudas mother Vinatha lost in a bet to Kadru, because of the latters deceitfulnes
s. Vinatha and Garuda had to do Kadrus bidding at all times, and also obey the di
ktats of the snakes, who were Kadrus sons. The only way for Vinatha and her son t
o be released from bondage was to bring the nectar that was guarded in the world
of the celestials. Garuda undertook the extremely difficult task of fetching th
e nectar. Thus, he released his mother from bondage.
The Vaishnavite Acharya Vedanta Desika had the grace of Garuda and became a poet
and logician nonpareil. There was a task that was dear to the Vaishnavite Achar
ya Nadadur Ammals heart. It was a point by point rebuttal of a work by another po
et. Nadadur Ammal was able to foresee that Desika would be the one to counter th
e arguments of the Kashmiri poet. Desika learnt the Garuda mantra from his mater
nal uncle, who was also his Acharya. The learning of the Garuda mantra was the f
irst step towards Desikas later rebuttal of arguments that ran counter to Visisht
advaita. At an appropriate time, Desika chanted the mantra, and Garuda appeared
before him and taught him the Hayagriva mantra.
Hayagriva is the Lord of knowledge, and He blessed Desika. Desika wrote the Garu
da Panchasat in praise of Garuda. Garuda is the personification of the Vedas.
