Algebra II
School year 2014-2015
Mr. Hunter Meade Phone number: VHS 821-5858 Room Number: 210
Course Goals: This course deals with algebraic concepts through the study of functions, polynomials, rational expressions, complex numbers, matrices and sequences and series. Emphasis will be placed on practical application and modeling. Included will be transformational approach to graphing functions using translation, reflection, dilation and rotations illustrating the connection between algebraic and graphic representation of functions. Oral and written communication concerning the language of algebra, logic of procedures, and interpretation of results will also be an essential part of the course. Course goals reflect those of the Virginia Standards of Learning.
Course Outline: First Semester: Analyzing Equations and Inequalities Linear Equations and Functions Linear Systems and Matrices Quadratic Functions and Factoring Polynomials and Polynomial Functions Rational Exponents and Radical Functions
Second Semester: Powers, Roots, and Radicals Exponential and Logarithmic Functions Quadratic Relations and Conic Sections Sequences and Series Probability and Statistics Trigonometric Ratios and Functions
Evaluation: Each final nine weeks grade is composed of the following:
Each graded item has a point value and the students average is calculated by taking the number of points earned by the student divided by the total possible number of points for the six weeks. To receive an A a student must have an average of 92.5 or higher.
Grading Scale: A 100-93; B 92-85; C 84-75; D 74-70; F 69-below
Textbook: Algebra 2, Larson; Houghton Mifflin Company
Materials required: Textbook, three-ring binder with paper, pencil, graphing calculator (supplied by school) and 4 AAA batteries for the calculator (Not Supplied by school)
Responsibilities: All tests, quizzes, classwork, and homework are to be done in pencil, NOT PEN!! Have all required materials with you every day. Have pencil sharpened or sharpen it as soon as you arrive. Have homework complete and on your desk with book open to the appropriate page at the beginning of class. Be in the classroom and in your seat before the tardy bell rings ready to begin on Class Opener and to begin taking notes. Consume all food and drink elsewhere. Have respect for property, yourself, and others. Always be present on the day before a test and test days. The day before a test is used to review and examples of test questions are discussed. If a student is absent on a test date, he or she should plan to take the test immediately upon returning to school. If a student is present any part of the day, he or she must turn in any assignments due in order to receive credit.
Suggestions for success: THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN YOUR SUCCESS IS YOU!!!!! Stay organized. A little time spent on getting organized every day will help immensely. Study. This does not mean just the night before a test. Go over your class notes every day. It will only take a few minutes daily, but it will save you a lot of time later. Ask for help before it is too late. Get help from a classmate or from me. Do not wait too long. Be persistent. Do not give up when the going gets rough. That is when you really need to work harder. Remember, I am here to help! Do your homework. Others can often help you with homework. Do not just copy. Two or three people working together can be very beneficial just be sure you do your own work. Be honest! If you are caught cheating, the grade you will get is a ZERO!!!! Attendance is very important. Be here every day!! Be prepared to work hard each day. Keep a positive attitude. You can do MATH!
ALL GRADES ARE POSTED ON PARENT PORTAL!!! If you have any questions feel free to email me at [email protected] Check webpage for assignments and videos. www.hmeade.weebly.com
Technology: During my class, any electronic device is prohibited, unless I tell you otherwise. If I see you using an electronic device then I will take disciplinary action in accordance with existing school board policies regarding student conduct. If I see you using an electronic device during a test or quiz then I will assume you are cheating and give you a zero for the grade.
Homework: All students will start off the semester with a homework grade of 50/50 points. If you do your homework then you will remain at 50/50. If you do not complete your homework then I will deduct 2 points and if you only complete a portion of the homework I will deduct 1 point. I do not except late work for homework unless you are absent on the day it was assigned or the day it was due. I will only accept late work if you were absent is if it is an excused absence, otherwise it will be recorded as a zero.
