An investigation is being undertaken to identify improvements to the Hill Road Interchange off the Southern Motorway in order to address current traffic issues and future proof longer term upgrades planned as part of the Southern Corridor Improvements project. Potential short term solutions being considered include widening the southbound off-ramp, improving the local road network, and widening the bridge to add an additional traffic lane or create space for walking and cycling. Longer term options involve extending the fourth lane added south of the interchange further north to Hill Road. Public feedback is being sought on issues and potential solutions.

HILL ROAD INTERCHANGE
OFF RAMP WIDENED
WALKING AND CYCLING FACILITIES IMPROVED BRIDGE WIDENED 4th LANE 'DROPS OFF' AT HILL ROAD H I L L R D What other issues at Hill Road would you like the project team to consider? What do you think of the potential solutions? Do you have any other ideas the team should think about? Please let us know by leaving your comments on our feedback form. Ask a member of the team if you need assistance. In addition, there are some short term improvements which are being investigated to respond to the most urgent and serious issues. Recognised issues: In the evening peak, trafc heading south queues back onto the motorway The narrow bridge provides limited space for pedestrians and cyclists Trafc across the bridge is limited to only two lanes Potential solutions: The investigation to date has identied some possible options: Widen the southbound of-ramp to accommodate two lanes Improvements to the local network i.e. along Hill Road Widen the bridge to provide an additional trafc lane Widen the bridge to provide a walking and cycling facility A northbound fourth lane sometimes called an auxiliary lane The Southern Corridor Improvements will provide three continuous lanes from Papakura to Hill Road. Rather than joining as a merge one option is to extend the fourth lane after Orams Road back to Hill Road. This early investigation is considering how to future proof for this. So what about south facing ramps? There is no plan at this stage to provide south facing ramps at Hill Road. Interchanges need to be approximately 2km apart to work safely and efciently the distance between Hill Road and Takanini would be less than this between the end of the on-ramp and start of the of-ramp. South facing ramps may attract more trafc to Hill Road which may cause issues for local trafc and residents. An early investigation of Hill Road Interchange is being undertaken so that longer term improvements can be future proofed as part of the Southern Corridor Improvements. HILL ROAD INTERCHANGE
