Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 5. USING CONTENT KNOWLEDGE TO BUILD MEANINGFUL
CURRICULUM
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs a) use their knowledge of
academic disciplines to design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive
development and learning for each and every young child. Candidates understand the importance
of developmental domains and academic (or content) disciplines in early childhood curriculum.
They b) know the essential concepts, inquiry tools, and structure of content areas, including
academic subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their understanding. Candidates c) use
their own knowledge and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful,
challenging curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for
every young child. (NAEYC, 2010)
Brief Description of Evidence:
During the fall semester of 2011 during my ECED 243 Cognitive Curriculm course, I
created a web plan design based upon the interests of pre schoolers. The unit web plan consisted
of a main theme that I based lesson plans around such as activites in social studies, science,
math, literacy, art/field trip, music, physical dramtic play and even cooking. I used the Indiana
Foundations and standards to help with the planning of each activity.
Analysis of What I Learned:
After successfully completing my web design work assignment I realized that I have
knowledge of academic disciplines to design, Implement, and evaluate experiences that promotes
positive development and learning for each child by being able to design a curriculum around
one theme and using several different content areas with measureable objectives for all children.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
To prove that I understand the importance of developmental domains, inquiry tools and
structure content area, my web design assignment centered on the Zoo shows that I was able to
develop a curriculum that was challenging, meaningful and promotes comprehensive
developmental and learning outcomes for every child. I believe by meeting the needs of all your
children is important when you are creating a meaningful curriculum. I also believe that themes
that are geared around the childs interest seem to be more popular.
