Soil Types

Different soil types form in different climatic regions. Prairie soils have a dark surface layer, are nutrient-rich, and form in grasslands. Forest soils have a light gray upper layer, iron- or aluminum-rich sublayers, and form in humid areas with coniferous forests. Tropical soils are reddish, iron-oxide rich but nutrient-depleted, forming in warm, humid regions.

horizon, a horizon rich in aluminum
and/or iron, and form in warm to
cool humid regions where coniferous
forests grow.
