Resistance and Resistivity
Example 13.2:
0.75A current flows through an iron wire and
when a battery of 1.5V is connected across
its ends. The length of wire is 5m and its
cross sectional area is 2.5E-7 . .Find the
resistivity?
Example 1:
If the Area is doubled will the resistance
increase or decrease and by what amount?
Does the resistivity increase/decrease by
same amount?
13.6 Color Coding of Resistance
What are Carbon Resistors?
Is a high grade ceramic rod, on which thin
layer of carbon is deposited.
What is the Meaning of Color coding
of resistance?
It means to encode value of resistance in
terms of colors.
13.6 Color Coding of Resistance
These line are called bands.
There are normally 4 bands.
There are 10 possible colors for first 3
bands.
And 2 possible colors for the last band.
13.6 Color Coding of Resistance
13.6 Color Coding of Resistance
Tolerance of a resistor.
It tells the possible variation in the value
of resistance.
OR the possible DEVIATION from actual
value of resistance
Golden band5%
Silver band 10%
No band 20%
13.6 Color Coding of Resistance
How to Calculate Tolerance?
Tell what is the resistance of this resistor?
What is the Tolerance indicated by
fourth band?
Formula:
Rheostat
It is a variable resistor. i.e. the resistor
whose value can be changed by us.
It is used for two main purposes
Variable resistor
Potential divider
Rheostat
Common application
Volume control knob
Fan speed control knob
Monitor screen brightness
Headphone volume control
Rheostat
Rheostat as a Variable resistor
Only one of the fixed terminal and Sliding
terminal is used for this purpose.
i.e terminal A and C
OR
Terminal B and C
