Control Charts

X-bar and S charts are preferable to X-bar and R charts when sample sizes are moderately large (greater than 10-12) or variable. To construct and operate X-bar and S charts, for each sample you calculate the sample average (X-bar) and standard deviation (S). Control limits are determined using formulas for the parameters of the X-bar chart and S chart. X-bar and S charts can also be used when sample sizes are variable by taking a weighted average approach to calculating X-bar and S.

CONTROL CHARTS FOR
X-bar and S
X-bar and S charts are
preferable to their more familiar
counterparts, X-bar and R
charts, when either
1. Sample size n is moderately,say
n>10 or 12
2. Sample size n is variable

Setting up and operating control
charts for x-bar and s requires
about the same sequence of
steps as those for x-bar and R
charts
Except for each sample we must
calculate sample average x-bar
