HETP Preliminary Calculation

The document describes Norton's Correlation equation for calculating the height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP) based on a liquid's surface tension, viscosity, and type of random packing. It provides the input data for a liquid with a surface tension of 29.57 dyne/cm and viscosity of 0.54 cP. Using this data in the equation along with a packing constant of 1.1308 results in a calculated HETP of 1.442284 feet or 0.439608 meters. Design safety factors of 20% or 15% can be applied depending on the number of theoretical stages required for separation.

Norton's Correlation : ln HETP = n - 0.187 ln + 0.

213 ln
= Surface Tension
= viscosity
n = constant related to type of random packing
Applicable when,
liquid phase surface tension > 4 dyne/cm & < 36 dyne/cm
liquid viscosity > 0.08 cP & < 0.83 cP
Input Data
Liquid-phase
Surface Tension, = 29.57 dyne/cm
Liquid Viscosity = 0.54 cP
n = 1.1308 Please do not change this value
Calculation
ln HETP = 0.366228
HETP = 1.442284 ft
= 0.439608 m
For separations, less than 15 theoritical stages, a 20% design safety factor can be applied.
For separations, requiring 15 to 25 theoritical stages, a 15% design safety factor can be applied.
