Setting: Ms. Deans classroom Who you observed: 1
st grade ESE students (3) Childrens age range: 6-7
FIELD NOTES 1. Describe the content of the lesson that you observed.
Today I observed a vocabulary lesson Ms. Dean conducted with her 1 st grade ESE students that she pulls every day. The lesson is from the text reading mastery which is pictured here.
2. Describe the instructional strategy or strategies (e. g., cooperative learning, peer tutoring, think alouds) that were utilized in the teaching of those concepts.
The strategy Ms. Dean used during this lesson was a think aloud/group assignment. To familiarize the students with tough words that will appear in their text for the day.
She sits at the table pictured bellow with the three students and follows the directions from the book.
This is a drill so the students hold a little rubber ball and recite after Ms. Dean the following words: animal, tickle, roared, toad, howling, leave, and turn.
When the student gets the ball they recite the word, spell it, and speak the syllables.
2. Please describe if and how the teacher utilized the following during the lesson: models, the arts, and technology. The teacher unfortunately did not use technology, or arts.
3. Describe the assessment strategies that the teacher used to assess the content knowledge of the student. These assessments might be formative or summative.
The teacher used automatic assessment, with the ball circulating around the group it hold each student to be ready and on task.
Take notes on student engagement. Pick several students to look at over the course of the lesson.
All three students for the most part are fully on task, there were a couple instances where Ms. Dean had to stop and re-direct, but otherwise went smoothly.
