Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 5. USING CONTENT KNOWLEDGE TO BUILD MEANINGFUL CURRICULUM
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs a) use their knowledge of academic disciplines
to design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive development and learning for each
and every young child. Candidates understand the importance of developmental domains and academic
(or content) disciplines in early childhood curriculum. They b) know the essential concepts, inquiry tools,
and structure of content areas, including academic subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their
understanding. Candidates c) use their own knowledge and other resources to design, implement, and
evaluate meaningful, challenging curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning
outcomes for every young child.

Brief Description of Evidence:
During the Fall semester of 2013 during my ECED 243-Early Childhood Curriculum course, I worked to
create a multiple intelligences mini unit framework for preschool aged children. The unit framework required
the use of an overall unit goal, Indiana Foundations, measurable objectives, and covered content specific
activities with objectives for literacy, math, science, art, bodily/kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal,
spatial, musical, and naturalist.
Analysis of What I Learned:
Through completion of this unit plan framework I was able to use Gardners multiple intelligences
theory to create multiple activities that cover several domains, content areas, and academic subjects. Because
I know that every child learns in different ways I know how important it is to implement multiple learning
styles in the classroom.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
I used my knowledge of Gardners multiple intelligences to design, meaningful, challenging, curriculum
that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for every young child. I constructed a
mini unit framework that covered eight learning styles. I understand the importance of developmental
domains and academic disciplines in early childhood curriculum. I am able to identify resources that will
deepen my understanding of the different ways children learn and ways to implement these styles in the early
childhood setting.
