aC THRUSTERS
TRAC Thrusters deliver more thrust per horsepower
than any other thruster available. TRACs twin
counter-rotating propellers are more effcient and
can reach higher horsepower than single
prop thrusters.
TRAC Thrusters in the range 20 to 200 hp may
be configured for AC motor drive. The thruster
motor is controlled by a Variable Frequency Drive
(VFD) to enable variable thruster speed and also
to limit motor starting inrush current.
Power for the AC motor is obtained from a
suitable ships generator (one able to supply
large non-linear loads). Powerline harmonic
filters may be required between the generator
and the VFD.
AC system VFDs are best installed in
environmentally controlled areas and may not
be practical on some vessels. Also, because
AC motors can place significantly more weight in
the thruster compartment, vessels with marginal
forward buoyancy should choose hydraulic drives.
