Articulators

The articulators are the different parts of the

mouth area that we use when speaking.
Articulators
Pharynx
Pharynx is a tube which begins just
above the larynx. It is about 7cm long in
women and about 8cm in men, and at its
top end it is divided into two, one part
being the back of the mouth and the other
being the beginning of the way through the
nasal cavity.
Articulators
Soft palate or velum
Soft palate is a muscular flap that can
be raised to press against the back wall of
the pharynx and shut off the nasal tract. It
is one of the articulators that can be
touched by the tongue.
Articulators
Hard palate
Hard palate is a bony structure which is
in the front part of the roof of the mouth. It
is often called the roof of the mouth.
Articulators
Alveolar ridge
Alveolar ridge is the gum ridge between
the top front teeth and the hard palate. Its
surface is really much rougher than it
feels, and is covered with little ridges.
Articulators
Tongue
Tongue is the soft part in the mouth
that moves around, used for tasting,
swallowing and speaking. It is a very
important articulator and it can be moved
into many different places and different
shapes. It is usual to divide the tongue into
different parts: tip, blade, front, back and
root.
Articulators
Teeth
Teeth are any of the hard white objects
in the mouth used for biting and chewing
food.
Articulators
Lips
Lips are the two soft edges at the
opening to the mouth.
Articulators
Vocal cords
Vocal cords are the strips of muscle in
the throat that move to produce the voice.
Articulators
Glottis
Glottis is the part of the throat that
contains the vocal cords and the narrow
opening between them.
Articulators
Epiglottis
Epiglottis is a thin piece of tissue at the
back of the tongue that prevents food or
drink from entering the lungs.
Articulators
Larynx
Larynx is the little box that is popularly
called the Adams apple, situated in the
upper part of the wind pipe or trachea
containing the vocal cords.
Articulators
Uvula
Uvula is a small appendage hanging
down at the lower end of the soft palate.
