Community Language Learning (CLL)

The founder was Charles Curran, an American Jesuit priest. Community Language Learning
(CLL) is a teaching method that considers their students as Whole persons.
Emphasized the learners responsibility for their own learning. The teacher-counsellor
would be able to speak the learners' native language.

Curran says there are six elements of effective learning.
Security: Students should feel secure to enter into a successful learning experience.
Attention: Attention is the learner's involvement in learning.
Aggression: is to show what has been learnt. The child tries to prove the things he/she has learnt.
Retention: Retention: If the "whole person" is involved in the learning process, learning is retained
and internalized.
Reflection: Reflection: Students need quiet reflection time in order to learn.
Discrimination: Students must discriminate or distinguish the similarities and differences of
learning.

Learner Roles: Initially the learner is very dependent on the teacher. He is a client of the
counselors. But when the learner continues to study, he becomes independent.
Teacher Roles: Teacher's initial role is that of a counsellor. Teacher tries to create a good
environment for learning.
Inter- actions: Teacher-student interactions occur in the classroom. In addition, group work, and
pair work tasks are carried by students. Finally, the teacher tries to remove himself from the circle
to increase student-student interactions.
