Eee 628 Solid State DC Drives: Unit 1

This document discusses a course on solid state DC drives taught by Dr. D. Elangovan. The first part introduces the course and discusses why electric drives are important. It then talks about a case study on energy savings from a pump motor system when a power electronics controller (PEC) is added. The document outlines demands for modern drives like precise speed and torque control. It explains issues with traditional DC motors and advantages of AC induction motors with solid state drives. The working principle and torque equations of a DC motor controlled by a solid state drive are also presented.

Consider a real case when a motor pump system of 15kW works 300
days a year, 24 hours a day and pumps 1200m
3
of water per day. By
on/off and throttling control, only, the system uses 0.36kWh/m
3
of
pumped water to keep the pressure rather constant for variable flow
rate. Let us consider that the cost of electrical energy is 0.08$/kWh.
Adding a P.E.C., in the same conditions, the energy consumption is
0.28kWh/m
3
of pumped water, with a refined pressure control.

Speed control can be done by varying supply voltage and
converter cascade slip-energy recovery
However efficient and wide range of sped control ?
