Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Bailey Gilbert Date: June 10, 2014

Grade and Topic: Third Grade: Reading Length of Lesson: 1 Hour
School: Highland Oaks Elementary

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:
Identify words with multiple meanings

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Identify meaning of multiple meaning word in context; give example of alternate meaning; use alternate
meaning appropriately in sentence
Student must score 8/10 or 80% on the student rubric to achieve mastery.
Using an online dictionary and spreadsheet, student will organize chart to represent words with multiple
meanings

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
L. 4. Determine or clarify meaning of unknown and multiple meaning words and phrases based on grade
3 reading and content, choosing flexibly an array of strategies.
Creativity and innovation
B. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression

PROBLEM STATEMENT: In my middle school spelling bee, I watched my classmate lose to someone two
grades below him because he spelled the word mourning as morning. He assumed there was only one way to
spell the word. If he had just asked for the definition, he would have known that the expression of sorrow and
sadness is not the same as the morning that means a time of the day. There are tons of words in the English
language that can mean totally different things. Without knowledge of multiple meaning words, there is room
for a lot of miscommunication. In this assignment, I want you to take some of our vocabulary words, and find
that they have more than one meaning.
