UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA: Identify words with multiple meanings
LESSON OBJECTIVE: Identify meaning of multiple meaning word in context; give example of alternate meaning; use alternate meaning appropriately in sentence Student must score 8/10 or 80% on the student rubric to achieve mastery. Using an online dictionary and spreadsheet, student will organize chart to represent words with multiple meanings
STANDARDS ADDRESSED: L. 4. Determine or clarify meaning of unknown and multiple meaning words and phrases based on grade 3 reading and content, choosing flexibly an array of strategies. Creativity and innovation B. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression
PROBLEM STATEMENT: In my middle school spelling bee, I watched my classmate lose to someone two grades below him because he spelled the word mourning as morning. He assumed there was only one way to spell the word. If he had just asked for the definition, he would have known that the expression of sorrow and sadness is not the same as the morning that means a time of the day. There are tons of words in the English language that can mean totally different things. Without knowledge of multiple meaning words, there is room for a lot of miscommunication. In this assignment, I want you to take some of our vocabulary words, and find that they have more than one meaning.

Organize words with multiple meanings into a spreadsheet
MATERIALS: Microsoft Word Internet Web Browser Online Dictionary (dictionary.com)
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE: Students will identify words that have multiple meanings and apply them in context. Using context clues will help not only aid for words will multiple meanings, but how to define unknown words
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE: Introduction: I will begin our lesson with my Multiple Meanings Joke Book (included attachment) on the projector. This will build on students background knowledge in a fun way.
Procedures: Before the Computer (Ten Minutes) 1. Students will sit on carpet when they enter the computer lab. 2. Students will do warm-up activity with me. 3. Students will listen to instructions and watch demonstration on overhead board. Students will watch how to navigate the Internet to dictionary.com. Students will learn how to create a table to store their data. Students will learn how to copy and paste definitions into their table. 4. Students will go to the computers. 5. Student directions will be pre-written on board.
At the Computer (Thirty-Five Minutes) 1. Students will open Internet Browser and go to dictionary.com. 2. Students will open Microsoft Word. 3. Students will type pre-written Sentence 1 examples from the board. 4. Students will find alternate definitions of the multiple meaning words on dictionary.com and paste them into spreadsheet. 5. Students will then create their own original sentences to place into the spreadsheet. 6. Once finished, students will save and print.
After Computer and Closure (Fifteen Minutes) 1. Students will gather back on carpet in circle and will volunteer to share their definitions and original sentences. 2. Students will spread around the room and complete Think Sheet. 3. Think Sheets will be completed at the start of the next class period.
ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE: Student must score an 8/10 for mastery on the student assessment rubric.
MODIFICATIONS: Students who need modifications will work with a pre-paired partner on the activity. List specific modifications for students who are ready for enrichment activities.
