MATH08051, 09022: Statistics: Course notes and book references

Book: Johnson and Bhattacharyya (J & B in notes): Statistics, Principles and Methods, Sixth edition.
The matches of Chapters from the course notes and from the book are advisory only. Use your
judgement when comparing the material from the two sources.
The material in Chapter 8, Likelihood, of the course notes is non-examinable so is omitted from this
list.
Several chapters from J & B are not listed here for various reasons. Chapter 3 (Descriptive study
of bivariate data) is background to other chapters of the course and the book. Chapters 4, 5 and 6 are
covered in the Probability or Probability with Applications courses. Chapters 12 and 15 are covered in
future years.
Chapter Book chapter
1. Statistical concepts
and technology Chapters 1 and 2
2. Random variables and Chapter 7

3. Inference 1: Estimation Chapters 8, 9, 10

The other book mentioned as supplementary reading for the course, Clarke and Cooke: A Basic
Course in Statistics, Fifth edition, is not followed so closely by the course notes so references to relevant
sections are not given here. Again, use your judgement when comparing the material from the course
notes and from Clarke and Cooke.
