Well, were not done yet

Lets put that knowledge to good use as we
begin learning multiplication!

So you think youve mastered
addition and subtraction?

How addition is like multiplication
Three ways to solve multiplication problems
Repeated Addition
Using Arrays
Using Grids (Cartesian)
Using/drawing pictures to solve
Writing multiplication equations

What Well Learn

No worries, well take it step-by-step starting with
what you know. (Addition has a lot in common with
multiplication!)

Sounds like a lot right?
Lets start at the very beginning
To solve How Many?, you can
count up by the same number
Repeated Addition
Or add by the same number
Repeated Addition
Click HERE to Practice Repeated Addition- Level 1
In the repeated addition method, adding by the
same number is key.
In multiplication, we call each equal cluster a group.

Multiplication equations identify:
how many groups (eg. 4 groups of , 3 groups of
) and
how many are in each group (eg. group of 5,
group of 2)

Transition to Multiplication
Identify:
How many balloons are in each group?
How many groups are there?
Transition to Multiplication
There are 3 balloons in each group.
There are 3 groups of balloons.
Transition to Multiplication
Speaking and writing:
There are 3 balloons in each group.
There are 3 groups of balloons.

3 balloons

This can be represented 3 different
ways:
2 + 2 + 2 = 6
3 groups of 2 roses
3 x 2 = 6

Remember:
THE COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY
In addition
2 + 3 = 3 +2

In multiplication
3 x 5 = 5 x 3

From Addition to Multiplication
Arrays
A visual approach
Arrays can help you visualize concepts youve already learned
Repeated Addition
Grouping
Multiplication equations
Groups can be set by either row or column

There is the same amount in each row and each column

Arrays

4 groups of 3 bunnies
3 groups of 4 bunnies
4 x 3 = 3 x 4

4 x 5 = 20

Back to Question 2
Using Grids
Finding combinations
Cartesian multiplication problems deal with find how
many possible combinations you can make with what
you have.
However, keeping track of all those combinations can
get confusing. Thats why using a grid when solving
these problems can help you get organized.

Using Grids
Pretend youre going on vacation

Youll be gone for tw0 weeks. Unfortunately, your
suitcase cant hold much. Trying to pack light, you pack 5
t-shirts and 3 bottoms.

Will there be enough possible combinations to wear a
different outfit every day of your vacation?

Creating a Grid
So it turns out there are 15 outfit possibilities from 5 t-
shirts and 3 bottoms; 1 for every day plus a spare!
Did you notice? The arrangement of the grid is similar
to an array?

Give the next question a
shot!
If I own 3 pairs of sneakers and 2 sets of shoelaces, how
many different shoe/shoelace combinations can I wear?

A. 5

B. 4

C. 6

D. 2
Question 3!

You really know your stuff!
Amazing!
Youre on your way!
Together we are venturing off to learn all about
multiplication!

Learning multiplication, like addition and subtraction,
will be challenging at first but is important to master
because it is a foundational skill you will need to do
well in higher math.

Dont worry, we will take our time and there is plenty
more practice to come! Also, feel free to return to this
power point for any guidance! Soon you will all be
multiplication pros!
