Dear Church,
Do you know what
year Bixby Knolls Christian
Church started? Who were
the people who led the
effort to start a Disciples
congregation in the Bixby
Knolls neighborhood?
What if no one had
taken the time to start our
congregation?
Two-thirds of the U.S.
population doesnt have a
Disciples congregation in
their neighborhood or
community as some of
our longtime members
who have recently moved
away have found out. As a
denomination, we are
working to change that.
Since 2001, we have
started 830 new congrega-
tions. These congrega-
tions have reached more
than 50,000 individuals,
and offer worship services
in at least 19 languages.
(As far as I know,
Bixby Knolls Christian
Church is the only Disci-
ples congregation to offer
a worship service in Khmer.
That is just one of the
things that makes us
unique.)
This Pentecost, we
focus on the development
of new congregations; we
celebrate the ways that our
own congregation is al-
ways in a state of becom-
ing new through transfor-
mation; and we celebrate
the new Disciples congre-
gations that are reaching
people in new locations.
I invite you to make a
contribution to this move-
ment. Envelopes for our
special Pentecost offering
benefitting new congrega-
tions were distributed in
worship last Sunday; they
can be returned next Sun-
day along with your regu-
lar Sunday offering. If you
dont have an envelope,
thats OK; just make out a
check to Bixby Knolls
Christian Church, and mark
Pentecost in the memo
line.
And be sure to con-
tinue supporting Bixby
Knolls Christian Church
throughout the summer
months. Lets continue the
transformation of our con-
gregation, so that we can
in turn continue transform-
ing our community and
our world!
Blessings,
Pastor Danny
P.S. In case
you dont
know, Bixby
Knolls Chris-
tian Church
was founded
in 1946. The
regional of-
fice purchased the property for $2,000, and sanc-
tuary construction began with $7,500 borrowed
from the Board of Church Extension. The first pas-
tor was J. Irving Rhodes, and several women E.E.
Mack, Emma Lewis, and Mrs. Clark Edgecomb
were instrumental in getting the church built.

My father didnt tell me how
to live; he lived, and let me
watch him do it.

An update on Grace. After breaking her hip and having sur-
gery, she has now been transferred to an assisted living resi-
dence called Sunrise Senior Living in Hermosa
Beach. Please continue to pray for her recovery as she
works to get her strength back. The plan is for her to stay
here for a month or two, and then be re-evaluated to see if
she can move back home. I know she would appreciate
cards and visits! Thanks, Ken. Sunrise Senior Living, Room 122,

CAMPBELL
LODGE
Grand Re-Opening Celebration
Last Saturday, several Bixby Knolls Christian Church members joined with others
from around the region for a grand celebration for the re-opening of Campbell Lodge at Loch Leven!
Built in the 1920s, Campbell Lodge had fallen into such disrepair that it was unusable. After generous
contributions by many (with a substantial gift from Wilshire Christian Church Foundation), a $1 million reno-
vation project began last year and is now finished. Loch Leven is owned & operated by Bixby Knolls Christian
Church and the other congregations of the Pacific Southwest Region. In addition to being the location of our
summer camp ministry, it is available for church groups, families, and individuals throughout the year. Speak-
ing of which
Its time to get those summer
camp forms turned in!

June is LGBT Pride
Month
According to the Library of Con-
gress, the purpose of the commemora-
tive month is to recognize the impact
that LGBT individuals have had on his-
tory locally, nationally, and internation-
ally. Much of this history has gone un-
noticed due to the persecution faced by
the LGBT community over the years.
As an Open and Affirming con-
gregation, Bixby Knolls Christian Church
welcomes everyone regardless of their
sexuality or gender identity. Later this
month, we will have a presentation dur-
ing worship on LGBT Pride Month, simi-
lar to recent presentations on Autism/
Aspergers Awareness month & African-
American History month.

Pentecost power

Ten days after Jesus ascended into
heaven, the Holy Spirit descended onto Jesus
disciples. While they were gathered in Jerusalem
to celebrate the Jewish festival of Pentecost, the
disciples saw flames among and on them, heard
a rushing wind and began talking in many lan-
guages. As a result, the disciples were able to
share the good news of Jesus in the native
tongues of all the pilgrims assembled in the city.
Even today, the power of the Holy Spirit
fuels the flame that ignites Christians outreach
efforts. Only by the Spirits power can we know
Christ and make him known throughout the
world.
Poet William Blake (1757-1827), whos
been described as a passionate, Pentecost kind
of person, wrote this poem about the Spirits
power:
Unless the eye catch fire,
The God will not be seen.
Unless the ear catch fire,
The God will not be heard.
Unless the tongue catch fire,
The God will not be named.
Unless the heart catch fire,
The God will not be loved.
Unless the mind catch fire,
The God will not be known.
