Rationale
Technology has a great deal of potential to generate opportunities for students to explore
concepts and information in new and exciting ways! However, when used ineffectively,
technology is nothing more than a hindrance to learning. I am a firm believer in
integrating a variety of electronic devices into my classes to support my students
education. These devices may include, but are not limited to, cellphones, tablets, personal
laptops, and iPods. These devices do not come without educational directions. The
following opportunities and obligations for technology use have been set up to help
create a secure, motivating, learning environment.
Opportunities
As long as I am in Miss Rileys classroom, I may:
o Use my device to take notes.
o Volunteer and permissibly use my device to fact-check, look up information that
may add to an ongoing class discussion, or in other relevant situations.
o Listen to music during work periods as long as I am wearing headphones.
o Leave my cellphone/pager on ringer in case of personal urgencies that have been
discussed with Miss Riley before the beginning of class.
Obligations
As long as I am in Miss Rileys classroom, I agree to:
o Keep my electronic devices silent and out of sight when they are not being used
for learning opportunities.
o Send and display only appropriate images and messages on my device.
o Refrain from and report any cases of cyber bullying.
o Respect and not carelessly or purposefully damage school computers, computer
systems, or computer networks.
o Respect copyright laws.
o Respect others property by not using their passwords or trespassing in their
folders, work, or files.
o Use my technological resources efficiently.
o Download and use only approved software, programs, etc.
o Honour the responsibilities of any other school-wide technology-use agreements
that I have made.
Penalties
The following penalties will be enacted when students fail to comply with any of the
specifications listed above:
1
st
Offence: Verbal warning.
2
nd
Offence: Device confiscated until the end of class.
3
rd
Offence: Device confiscated until the end of the day. Parents will be contacted to
discuss further consequences.
** Devices confiscated for a class will be kept in a labeled, sealed envelope in my desk.
** Devices confiscated for the day will be sealed in a labeled envelope and sent to the
office, where they will be available for pick-up at the end of the day.
I have read and understand the opportunities and obligations presented by my technology
use in the classroom. If I should abuse these opportunities and/or not meet my
obligations, I understand and accept the listed penalties.
