Intermediate - Percent Tables
During our time together in class, we have completed many different math
tasks, many of which, I had some exposure to in the past, until percent tables!
Percent tables are something that I have never seen before. In the past while
completing percent problem in my head, for example, when calculating tip, I
naturally always went to finding 10%. I found this to be the easiest way to work
with percents. If I ever had to find percent in math class, I always used the typical
method of changing it to a decimal and multiplying.
I do have to admit, it took me a while to catch on to the percent table method
but once I got it, I feel like a whole new math world had been exposed to me. I have
to admit, I cant believe I had never seen it before. I find myself using it frequently
throughout my life. It is much more efficient and can be a great estimation tool.
This is probably the top lesson that I plan to implement with my class. We
will be approaching percents in the next few weeks. I feel that the percent tables are
a great, concrete way of showing percent. It will increase their number sense with
percerts immensely. I feel that by writing out the percent table and manipulating the
numbers, students will also see the relationship between percents and fractions.
This is often missed. At the high school level, I often noticed that students did not
understand the relationship that taking 25% of something is the same as
multiplying by or dividing by 4. I feel that the percent tables will greatly help with
this misunderstanding and provide as a great tool for the common core assessment
questions.
