Childhood

Personal Life
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, or more commonly known by her stage name Lady
Gaga, was born on March 28 1986 to Cynthia and Joseph Germanotta. Her father, Joseph,
was Italian while her mother, Cynthia was half Italian and half French-Canadian however she
also has many other countries in her descent. Both parents were Roman Catholics and
together they raised Stefani and her younger sister, Natali born in 1992, to be very religious.

Music at a Young Age
It was only when she was 11 that she began school at the Convent of the Sacred Heart. At
school she was bullied for her appearance and her eccentric habits. Although she was
continuously bullied at school, she was at home in singing, playing piano and acting. When
Stefani was only four years old she had began to play piano, and at the age of 13 she wrote
her first piano ballad. When she was 14 she started performing at open mike nights in clubs
and bars and when she was old enough, she started to participate in school productions
such as Guys and Dolls, A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum and The
Sopranos.
When Stefani was 17 she gained early admission to New York Universitys Tisch School of
the Arts. Her mother had encouraged her to leave school to apply, and she was one of the
20 students who were gained early admission. At the school, she sharpened her song
writing skills as well as composing essays on art, religion, social issues and politics.
After studying at the university for two years, Stefani moved out of her parents house to
pursue a music career. She had made a deal with her father that he would pay her rent if
she returned back to her home in case her singing career didnt work.

Music Career

First Experiences
After moving out of her childhood home, Stefani formed a band with some of her friends
from her university, of which Stefani was the lead singer. The band played in bars around
New York and soon had created a small fan base. This attracted the attention of Rob Fusari,
a New York record producer. The band had split up soon after Stefani met the producer,
however in 2006 she had started recording songs as a solo artist. She had meant to release
an album in nine months time, but sadly she was dropped from the contract after only three
months. Keeping to her deal with her father, Stefani returned to her parents home.

Lady Gagas Stage Name
Although Stefani had been dropped from her contract with Rob Fusari from Def Jam
Records, from the experience she had taken on a new name, Lady Gaga.
While she had been recording her songs in the studio, Rob Fusari had commented on her
singing talent and style, relating her to Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the British band,
Queen. From this comment the title Lady Gaga had emerged, inspired by the song Radio
Ga Ga.
One day, when Stefani was in the process of creating a catchy stage name, she received a
text from Fusari reading Lady Gaga. The next day, instead of saying hello to Fusari, she
began singing Radio Gaga. This sealed that her new stage name would be Lady Gaga, and
she requested never to be called Stefani again.

Lady Starlight
After being dropped from the recording contact, Lady Gaga entered a dark period in her life.
For the rest of the year, she became experimental with drugs and became a go-go dancer,
performing in bars and clubs. It was only in 2007 that she restarted her musical career.
In early 2007, she met Lady Starlight, and later that year she performed with her at the
Lollapalooza Festival. Their show received positive reviews and later Lady Gaga became a
songwriter for Sony ATV. After writing songs for Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block and
the Pussycat Dolls she joined Cherrytree Records and became her own artist.

Hit Songs and Success

The Fame
On 19 August 2008 Lady Gaga released her first album The Fame. Although it was not an
immediate hit, she moved to Los Angeles and toured The Fame Ball Tour, however it was
only in January of 2009 that her lead single, Just Dance, topped the International song
charts. This song one her a Grammy nomination, and the song soon became one of the best
selling singles. This was a huge step forward for Lady Gaga, especially after being set back
from her first attempt at song-writing.
Her next song, Poker Face, was an even bigger hit than Just Dance, selling 9.8 million
copies, and won the Best Dance Recording Grammy and the album won Best
Dance/Electronica Album.

The Fame Monster
Later that year she released an extended version of the album, The Fame Monster. Bad
Romance topped the charts in 18 countries and won 2 Grammys while her next single
Telephone, featuring Beyonce Knowles, became her fourth UK number one hit.
Lady Gaga continued to right many songs such as Alejandro and Born This Way. At the
2010 MTV Video Music Awards Lady Gaga wore her iconic meat dress made entirely of
meat. She also became the first artist to hold one billion views on Youtube.
In November 2010, Lady Gaga released her third album, Artpop, and is currently preparing
for her Artpop tour.

Born This Way Foundation

In 2011, Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta launched the non-profit Born This
Way Foundation. The foundation strives to inspire youth and create a braver and kinder
world. It creates safe spaces, promotes the learning of life skills and provides
opportunities to improve their local communities.
It had been based on her previous hit song, Born This Way. The song had been inspired by
1990s empowering music, empowering woman and the gay community. After singing part
of the chorus at the 2010 MTV Music Video Awards, she released the song as the lead single
of her run-on album, The Fame Monster.
Lady Gaga states that My mother and I have initiated a passion project [...] to establish a standard
of bravery and kindness, as well as a community worldwide that protects and nurtures others in the
face of bullying and abandonment."
She has also said that her inspiration for this foundation had come her own childhood. Lady Gaga
was teased and bullied for her appearance, as she was small and plumper than the other girls with
large front teeth, and for her eccentric habits.
The foundation makes differences to many peoples lives and is still running.

Conclusion

Lady Gaga has definitely made a mark on the music industry through her unusual style and
electric music. Her passion for helping others shows that although she can be weird and
wacky, she also has a kind heart. Overall, Lady Gaga shows that she is definitely a star in our
world.
