Library Research:

How to find and evaluate print resources

Print vs. Internet Resources
Web
Lightweight,
repetitive, &
unreliable
Requires extensive
evaluation; no quality
control; disorganized
Impermanent and
change frequently
Searching tools are
weak; make searching
inefficient
Print
Libraries have already
selected
authoritative, reliable
resources
Permanent
collections that do
not disappear
Free resources
Librarians to help
with efficient
searching
TAKE NOTE!
As a rule of thumb, the more detailed or
scholarly your research, the less you should
rely on Web resources!
- Strategems, p. 189
It would be helpful to keep a notebook or
journal to record the bibliographic information
of the sources you find during your research.
Write down the following for each work:
Author
Title
Publisher
Date and place of publication
Page numbers

his/her information? Could you find it yourself?
Authority Who is the author? What makes you trust this
author?
Currency When was the source created or published?
Objectivity Are there logical errors such as biased viewpoint,
lack of alternative explanations, generalizations,
or personal attack?
Usefulness Is the information sufficiently detailed and
relevant?
