Day 10 OBJECTIVE Students will know and apply the Midsegment Theorem. Students will solve proofs involving the Midsegment Theorem and be able to explain how they solved the proofs. Students will be able to write a paragraph proof. STANDARDS Common Core Standards: Geometry: Congruence 10. Prove theorems about triangles. Theorems include: measures of interior angles of a triangle sum to 180; base angles of isosceles triangles are congruent; the segment joining midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side and half the length; the medians of a triangle meet at a point; the altitudes of a triangle meet at a point.
ISTE Technology standards: 1. Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. 2. Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media b. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats 5. Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity c. Demonstrate personal responsibility for lifelong learning PREPARATION Continue to discuss important elements of proofs with students. Explain how paragraph proofs are similar to two-column proofs. Continue to work with students in creating road maps for proof solving. Have a few iPads available for students that may need them to complete classwork. GUIDED INSTRUCTION STUDENT WORK The teacher will explain the Midsegment Theorem. Explain what the Midsegment is and how it creates two similar triangles. Make sure to review with Students will write down all class notes in their notebooks.
students the properties of similar triangles. Have students draw a diagram of the Midsegment Theorem and write its definition. Have them pin it to their Pinterest boards. The teacher will use the Midsegment Theorem in solving a proof. Ask students a long the way to provide information that will help solve the proof. Help students first design a road map to figure out what information is necessary and then how to best organize that information. Explain how the road map can be used to create a two-column proof. Once the two column proof is complete show how them how to use the structure to write a paragraph proof. Explain that the two-column proof and the paragraph proof are very similar. Assign the homework assignment to the class. Students will complete a proof provided below. Remind them that the rough draft of the proof and the final draft are two separate pins.
Students will draw an original diagram of the Midsegment Theorem and write down its definition. They will upload an image of their diagram to their Pinterest board. They can use their own device or class iPad.
Students will answer questions and help discuss the best road map to solving the proof.
Students will write down the two-column proof. Students will write down the paragraph proof.
Students will make sure that their Midsegment Theorem diagram is uploaded. Students will solve the proof and provide both a rough draft, (an image of their work or a video explaining their work) and a final paragraph proof. Paragraph proof can be an image of their handwritten work or a screenshot of a typed up paragraph. STUDENT PRODUCTS Students will upload an original diagram and definition of the Midsegment Theorem. Students will upload a rough draft of their proof; this can be an image of their written work or a short video. Students will complete a paragraph proof and upload it Pinterest. ADDITIONAL MATERIALS IPad or other device for uploading photos or video Pinterest Internet access
