JNTUA COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING PULIVENDULA

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

III B.TECH, II SEMESTER, II MID EXAMINATIONS
DESIGN OF MACHINE ELEMENTS II
DATE : 28-05-2014

DURATION: 90 MIN

TIME:

MAX MARKS: 30
ANSWER ANY THREE FROM THE FOLLOWING
EACH QUESTION CARRIES EQUAL MARKS

1. A vertical screw with single start square threads of 50mm mean diameter and 12.5mm pitch is raised against
a load of 10kN by means of a hand wheel, the boss of which is threaded to act as a nut. The axial load is
taken up by a thrust collar which supports the wheel boss and has a mean diameter of 60mm. the coefficient
of friction is 0.15 for the screw and 0.18 for collar. If the tangential force applied by each hand to the wheel
is 100N. Find suitable diameter of the hand wheel.

2. Design completely a connecting rod, the bolts for the big end cap for a medium speed, four cylinders I.C
engine, given the following data.

Piston diameter = 100mm, Stroke = 125mm, Weight of the reciprocating parts = 1.3kg,

Length of the

connecting rod =310cm, RPM of engine normal = 1200, RPM of the engine over speed = 2000, Max
explosion pressure = 2.8MPa.
State clearly the values adopted for the factors of safety and the ultimate stresses and underline them. Draw
the free hand sketch to about full size, a proportionate elevation of the connecting rod and add either an end
view or an sectional view.

3. A bar of rectangular cross-section, with a width of 60mm and a thickness of 40mm, is bent in the shape of a
horse shoe having a mean radius of 70mm. Two equal and opposite force of 10kN each are applied at a
distance of 12cm from the centre line of the middle section so that they tend to straighten the rod. Find the
maximum tensile and compressive stresses. Construct a diagram showing the variation of the normal stresses
over the central section.

4. A) Explain with a neat sketch the working principle of recirculating ball screw.
B) List the type of threads used in power screws. Give practical example for each type of threads
5. A) What are the main requirements of an internal combustion engine crankshaft?
B) Draw the distribution of bending stresses in curved beams.
