Assignment 1 EPO630 MAC2014

The document contains three assignments related to high voltage engineering. The first assignment asks the student to determine Townsend's primary and secondary ionization coefficients from a table of experimental data measuring current growth in a gas. The second assignment asks the student to calculate the breakdown voltage and ionization coefficients for a uniform-field spark gap under different cathode materials. The third assignment asks the student to determine the visual corona voltage and corona power losses for a 3-phase transmission line operating at 400kV based on specifications provided.

HIGH VOLTAGE ENGINEERING EPO 630

ASSIGNMENT 1 MAC 2014

1. a) Table 1.1 gives the set of observations obtained while studying the Townsend
current growth phenomenon in a gas. From the data given, determine the
values of Townsends primary and secondary coefficients of ionization.
The critical gap distance can be assumed to be 6.7 mm.
The initial or saturated current value was 0.5 x 10
-13
A.

2. Calculate the breakdown voltage of a uniform-field spark gap of length 3 cm in a gas at
a pressure (p) of 200 torr if, when the secondary ionization coefficient () is halved due
to a change of cathode material, the percentage change in V
S
is 2%. Assume that,
over the very restricted range of E in question, = 0.0015 E - 8.38, where is in ion-
pairs cm and E is the field in V cm. Determine also the values of and before and
after the cathode change.

3. a) A 3-phase transmission line operate at 400 kV. The conductors are 2.0 cm in
diameter and arranged in a horizontal configuration with equal spacing of 3.0
m. The surrounding air is at a temperature of 34
o
C and at a barometric
pressure of 765 mm Hg. Determine the visual corona voltage.
Assume the irregularity factor is 0.82.

b) Calculate the corona power losses in kW/km/phase at the above transmission
in (a) using Peeks equation.
