How Does Email Work?

Sending Mail:
When sending an email, your email program connects to the Internet Service
Providers mail server. Before the email is sent the message may be broen do!n into
packets. " pacet is a data#transmission term for a small bundle of data sent across a
net!or $such as a %"& or Internet'. When mail is divided into pacets they can
send(travel more )uicly and !hen they reach their destination the pacets are put bac
together as one email.
Sorting the Mail:
*#mail messages are sorted by domain and the domain identifies !here the message
needs to go. +he domain name is lined to a specific !eb address (TCP!P". TCP!P is
t!o separate protocols, +,P and IP. !nternet Protocol has a pacet#addressing
method that lets any computer on the Internet for!ard a pacet to another computer
that is a step $or more' closer to the pacet-s recipient. +he Transmission Control
Protocol ensures the reliability of data transmission across Internet connected
net!ors. +hese are stored in the .omain &ame /egistry. When e#mail server
receives the messages, it !ill e0amine the domain to see !hat IP address to send the
message to.
Deli#ering the Mail:
.epending on the destination of the server, the e#mail may travel bet!een several
transfer points. *ach transfer point the domain is identified and then the email is
passed off to another transfer point. +his process is repeated until the email has
reached the correct destination. When the e#mail reaches the proper destination, it is
stored and ept in the email account until the user checs the e#mail. 1nce the user
retrieves the ne! e#mails the messages 2ourney is complete. It does sound lie a long
process but the delivering process of e#mails occurs in the matter of seconds.
