2: Polynomial Functions and Their Graphs [Algebra 2(Y)]

HCPS III
Standard 9: Patterns, Functions, and Algebra: PATTERNS AND FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Understand various types of patterns and functional relationships.
Benchmark MA.AII.9.3: Use the properties of many types of functions (e.g., polynomial, step,
absolute value, step, exponential, and logarithmic ) to identify the functions graph.
Goal: Define, graph, and use polynomial functions.

Polynomials

Polynomial: a monomial or a sum of monomials with real number
coefficients.
Monomial: a number, variable, or the product of a number and
one or more variables with whole number (positive) exponents.

Standard Form: terms are written in descending order of exponents
from left to right.
Leading Coefficient: the coefficient of the first term.
Degree: the exponent of the first term.
Constant Term: a term that has no variable.

Example:
3
+ 4 + 9
5
+ 7

Example 1: Identify Polynomial Functions
Tell whether the function is a polynomial function. If it is, determine the following:
(1) degree, (2) type, (3) leading coefficient, and (4) end behavior.

Example 2: Graph Polynomial Functions
Graph the polynomial function. Use the domain == 3, 2, 1, 0, 1, 2, 3. Then
describe the end behavior of the graph.
