Algebra tiles can be used to model algebraic expressions by representing variables and coefficients with tiles. Terms with the same variable coefficient are considered like terms and can be collected together. For example, modeling (3x+1)+(2x-3) with tiles shows it can be collected to 5x-2 by grouping the 3x and 2x tiles and combining the numerical coefficients.

Using Algebra Tiles
Model (+3)+(+2) using integer x tiles.
x 2 (+3) +(+2) =+5 Model (+3x)+(+2x) using algebra tiles.
3x + 2x = 5x Model 3x+1+2x-3 using algebra tiles.
3x +1 +2x +(-3) = 5x-2
Every term has a numerical coefficient and a literal coefficient. Like terms have the same literal coefficients. Collection is the process of collecting like terms together.
