The kid-friendly informational book Bugs Are Insects allows learners to note the
characteristics of insects.
The teacher will explain that students will be learning about insects today.
The teacher will review the learning objectives.
The teacher will introduce new vocabulary.

Lesson Sequence:
The teacher will present the terms of the insect parts to the class (head, abdomen,
thorax, legs, antennae) and we will go over insect characteristics (six legs, two antenna,
sometimes wings).
To reinforce the new words of the insect, we will sing a song to the tune of Head,
Shoulders, Knees, and Toes. Motions are also included pointing to head, stomach,
rear, eyes, back, and legs.

Six buggy legs,
And thats an insect for you!
As a group, we will make a list of types of insects and characteristics of insects as a
visual for students.
Keeping in mind students proficiency levels, the teacher will go at a slower rate,
enunciate, and use simpler sentence structures for ELL and other at-risk students.
Considering students English language proficiency, the teacher will divide them into
heterogeneous groups of two or three. The Create An Insect game will be distributed
and directions will be presented.
o Students will spin the spinner, which lands on the following: wing, leg, thorax,
abdomen, leg, head, leg, or antenna.
o Whichever it lands on, the student will draw it on a piece of paper and label it.
If the student lands on an insect part they dont need, they pass their turn. The
goal is to create a drawn insect first.
The teacher will model the game for students to ensure they know how to take turns
playing.
As students work on their game, the teacher will monitor that students are taking turns,
following directions, and using the new words of the insect.
The teacher, with an aide or helper, will be working with the groups if they need
additional help to read the true/false cards, scaffolding them.
If ELL students need more clarification on these concepts and terms, the teacher will
provide this as an opportunity for them to clarify the concepts in their L1 as needed
with a peer or text.
Teacher will disperse books to student groups.
Students will choose a book about insects to read.
Students will write what they remember about insects into their commonplace book.
Students, working with a peer(s), will look at picture cards of insects and non-insects
identify which pictures are of insects and specific body parts.
