Session Number 2 - Getting to know more about you through standardized
assessment!
Section A Lesson Plan
Learning Target(s): (What will you the teacher know & be able to do as a result of this
lesson?)
Common Core for Kindergarten:
I can print many uppercase and lowercase letters. L.K.1

My goal is to express and strengthen emergent print concepts and further my students
phonemic awareness.

Relevance/Rationale: (Why are the outcomes of this lesson important in the real world?
Why are these outcomes essential for future learning?)

The students awareness of letter sounds and visual recognition of the alphabet is a vital
foundational step needed for reading and writing.

Activities/Tasks: (What learning experiences will students engage in? How will you use
these learning experiences or their student products as formative assessment
opportunities?)
We watched and Danced to (I projected it)

We read the LMNO Peas by Keith Baker

We used the blue letter tiles to explore letters, sounds and a few simple cvc words and also,
for me to utilize the tile test as a method of assessment.

I chose a multi-sensory approach using music, movement, visual cues and tactile manipulatives to
engage the student in all possible learning modalities he might favor. I am able to use observational
assessment of my students interactions with the alphabet and gage what his interest in and what skills
he has and needs to have to build a foundation for reading and writing. I was use alphabet tiles and the
Tile test to assessment my students knowledge of letters and sounds.

Section B
What assessment did you choose from Appendix A and why did you choose this assessment
to do with your learner?
I chose the Tile Test as my student is an emergent reader. He is just learning to visually
master the alphabet and some letter sounds so the other methods of assessment would not
have been developmentally appropriate and more than likely inconclusive. It also, gave me
the opportunity to observe his interactions with the alphabet and his memory recall. I used
open-ended questioning and let me him introduce me to his knowledge of the Alphabet.
For instance. After I dumped the letters out he elaborated that he found my letters for his
first name BEN. Then he began to sort out the letters he knew. We also sang the Alphabet
song from the youtube video and lined them up and talked about the sounds. The
assessment was informative, but as Ben is new to reading he scored very low which was as
I suspected given that school just started two months ago. He did well with the letter
sounds but the CVC words were brand-new to him.

What did you learn about your learner that is important for designing lessons for them?
Well, I was very lucky the book he was interested in during the last visit (LMNO Peas) fit
perfectly with my method of assessment.
I found that I am very fortunate because my student has been exposed to a great deal of
literacy in the home prior to school and is very interested in literacy. He knows many of
the letters of the capitalized alphabet (approximately 23 of the 26), the lowercase tiles
were a little confusing for him so he helped me pluck out lowercase so we could focus on
the uppercase. He did know the lowercase letters of his first name, he elaborated that I
have a Benjamin sign on the door.
What did you learn about yourself as a teacher?
I learned that I really enjoy teaching the building blocks of literacy. Two years ago, I was a
literacy tutor using a prescribed program for a private company, I greatly disliked the
program so I honestly dreaded teaching it. I honestly thought I preferred more STEM
related lessons but having the opportunity to control the lesson planning has really made
me enjoy it. And again, as last weekthat I really hope to graduate to a higher grade next
school year. Though I love my pre-kinders, I really wish I could do more content area
teaching, as opposed to my current position being more of a facilitator of social-emotional
and developmental education.
