Assignment 03

This document contains 9 questions related to microwave engineering concepts such as resonant frequency of a cavity, cut-off wavelength and characteristic impedance of a rectangular waveguide, attenuation constant and phase velocity in a waveguide, wave impedance of an X-band waveguide, design of a rectangular waveguide with a dielectric filling, and power calculations for directional couplers based on coupling factor, directivity, and insertion loss. The questions involve calculating parameters for rectangular and dielectric filled waveguides operating in various modes at different frequencies, as well as determining power levels at the output of a directional coupler given its specifications and the input power.

2. A rectangular waveguide of cross-section 5 cm x 2 cm is used to propagate TM
11
mode at
10 GHz. Determine the cut-off wavelength and the characteristic impedance.

3. A rectangular air-filled copper waveguide with dimension 0.9 inch x 0.4 inch cross
section and 12 length is operated at 9.2 GHz with a dominant mode. Find (a) cut-off
frequency (b) guide wavelength (c) phase velocity (d) characteristic impedance and loss.

5. An air -filled X-band waveguide (0.9 inch x 0.4 inch) is fed from a signal source at 6
GHz. Calculate the wave impedance. Explain about the characteristic of single
propagation through the guide.

6. Design a rectangular waveguide with filling by a dielectric of 4

frequency for the dominant mode is 14 GHz and the cut-off frequency for the TM11
mode is 30 GHz.

7. Calculate the coupling factor of a directional coupler when incident power is 600 mW
and power in auxiliary waveguide is 350 watt.

8. For a directional coupler the incident power is 550 mW, calculate the power in the main
arm and auxiliary arm. The coupling factor is 30 dB.

9. Incident power to a Directional coupler is 90 watts. The directional coupler has coupling
factor of 20 dB, directivity of 35 dB and Insertion loss of 0.5 dB. Find the output power
at main arm, coupled and isolated parts.
