Chapter 4

The document discusses the Intelligrid architecture for developing a smart grid. It outlines five key functionalities of the smart grid: 1) visualizing the power system in real time, 2) increasing system capacity, 3) improving data infrastructure, 4) upgrading control centers, and 5) enabling a self-healing grid. The smart grid will also focus on relieving bottlenecks, enabling connectivity to consumers through an energy port, and allowing two-way communication between the grid and consumers.

Introduction
Todays electricity infrastructure is inadequate to meet rising
consumer needs and expectations
In 2001 EPRI and the electricity innovation institute initiated
Consortium for electric Infrastructure to support a digital society
To build public/private partnerships to meet the energy needs of tomorrows society
The consortium has more that over 50 collaborative partners

Five Functionalities :
Visualizing the power system in real time
Increasing system capacity :
Transmission circuit
Bringing substation lines up to NERC N 1 Criteria
Improvement on data infrastructure
Upgrading control centers and updating protection schemes and relay
Akhilesh Panwar (13MEEN01) 3
Relieving Bottlenecks :
To eliminate many of the bottlenecks that currently limit a truly
functional wholesale market and to assure system stability
Increasing power flow , enhanced voltage support
Operation of the electrical system on a dynamic basis

Enabling a self healing Grid
Controlling the system in real time :
Technology expected .
Power Electronics circuit breaker
Flexible AC Transmission Technologies
Advanced control architecture to enable a self healing
Akhilesh Panwar (13MEEN01) 5
Enabling connectivity to consumers
Integration of a communication system throughout much of the
power system
Allow electricity services : Billing information of real time pricing
Services related to electricity : Home security or appliance monitoring
Communication services : data services

Energy Port :
The consumer gateway constrained by the meter , allowing price signal
, Decisions , Communication and network intelligence to flow back and
forth through a seamless two way portal .
