Directions for unit assignment: Due: Friday

The class will split up into predetermined groups of 5. Each group will pick 1 visual display to create and
present to the class from the 3 selections available. You will also pick one task to perform in front of the
class. The third part of the unit assignment is a short paper that each individual student will have to write
and turn in on the same day. Time will be given in class to work on task and groups will be given library
time for research. If additional time is needed your group can see me about staying after school.
Short Paper requirements:
Each individual student will write a short paper about the different Native Americans settlement locations
and their features and climates. Also, how Native American locations influenced traditions and customs.
Your paper should also included information the cause for moving westward. Discuss environmental
changes while moving westward and how it affected the people. Your paper should be handwritten to
avoid copying and pasting and handwriting must be readable. I want you all to use at least book as source
of information and provide a page of listed sources.
Visual Display Options: Pick One
1. A guidebook or instruction manual to live off the land. This guide should give information about
Native Americans lived in the wild. It should include how found: shelter, food, clothes and
anything else; how they interacted with animals, hunting and gathering, what they did in case of
danger from animals, other humans or tribes and extreme weather.
2. A large colorful poster labeling and showing features of what ALL the Native American
locations look like or a detailed creative Diorama of JUST ONE location. By locations I mean
placed of Native Americans settlements we talked about in class [Arctic (Inuit), Northwest
(Kwakiutl), Plateau (Nez Perce), Southwest (Hopi), Plains (Pawnee), and Southeast (Seminole)].
3. Create a timeline of the Native American life after the Europeans arrived and events that affected
their culture. Be sure to include westward expansion and some events afterward. Show at least 5
different times.
Performance Options: Pick One
1. Perform an authentic Native American song and dance. Performance must be at least 1 to 2
minutes long. Information about the song and dance must be stated: which tribe it belonged to,
purpose of dance, etc.
2. Perform a mock trial. One student will play a judge, two will play lawyers, one a Native
American and the last student a European. The defense shall be the Native American and one
lawyer and the plaintive will be the European and the other lawyer. The two sides are fighting
over land. The Native American and his/her ancestors have lived on that land for years. The
European has just bought the land from someone else and intends to kick the Native Americans
off. Both lawyers will tell why their client should have the land from their clients perspectives.
Each side will be given 5 minutes to give their case and then the judge shall decide.

Please be creative!! I am excited to see what you come up with.
This assignment will NOT be graded. However, this is the checklist and rubric I will be using to assess
how you did:
