Tutorial 8 (Linear Motion) EE004-3-0-MSC

The document contains 7 problems involving linear motion. Problem 1 asks for the position, velocity, and acceleration of a particle given its position equation when t=3s. Problem 2 asks for the position and acceleration when the velocity is zero given a position equation. Problem 3 asks for the velocity, position, and distance traveled at t=9s given an acceleration equation.

Tutorial 8 (Linear Motion) EE004-3-0-MSC 1.

The motion of a particle is defined by the relation , where x and t are expressed in inches and seconds, respectively. Determine the position, velocity and the acceleration of the particle when t= 3 s. [Ans: x = 3 in, v = 28 in/s, a = 54 in/s2] 2. The motion of a particle is defined by the relation , where x and t are expressed in inches and seconds, respectively. Determine the position and the acceleration of the particle when velocity is zero. [Ans: t = 1 s, x = 25 m, a = -12 m/s2 ; t = 5 s, x = -7 m, a = 12 m/s2] 3. The acceleration of a particle as it moves along a straight line is given by a = (2t 9) m/s2, where t is in seconds. If s = 1m and v = 10 m/s when t = 0, determine the particles velocity and position when t = 9s. Also, determine the total distance the particle travels during this time period. [Ans: x = -30.5 m, v = 10 m/s, d = 56 m] 4. The position of a particle which moves along a straight line is defined by the relation where x is expressed in meter and t in seconds. Determine a) the time at which the velocity will be zero [Ans: t = 5s] b) the position and distance travelled by the particle at that time [Ans: x = -60 m, d = -100 m] c) the acceleration of the particle at that time [Ans: a = 18 m/s2] d) the distance travelled by the particle from t = 4s to t = 6s [Ans: d = 18 m] 5. A car starts from rest and reaches a speed of 80 ft/s after traveling 500 ft along a straight road. Determine its constant acceleration and the time of travel. [Ans: a = 6.40 ft/s2, t = 12.5 s] 6. A baseball is thrown downward from a 50 ft tower with an initial speed of 18 ft/s. Determine the speed at which it hits the ground and the time of travel. [Ans: v = 59.5 ft/s, t = 1.29s] 7. Ball A is released from rest at a height of 40 ft at the same time that a second ball B is thrown upward 5 ft from the ground. If the balls pass one another at a height of 20 ft, determine the speed at which ball B was thrown upward. [Ans: v = 31.4 ft/s]
