“El Mercado de Moda”

ACTFL Standards: 1.1,1.2,1.3,1.4,3.1

Interdisciplinary Connections: History, Math

General Goals: The goal is to make students understand vocabulary and


grammar related to the “De Compras” chapter of Aventuras by putting the
language to use within a real-life context.

Objectives: The students will be able to communicate using the vocabulary


related to “de compras” including numbers 101 and higher.

Materials: Foreign currency cut outs

Receipt print outs

Country name cut outs

Pre-Class Preparation: Print several copies of the currency to print, cut


and glue together.

Anticipatory Set: Tell the class how different countries have different forms
of currency. Show the class currency from different countries. Ask the class if
they know any of the figures. Explain who some of the figures are and why
they are important i.e. Esta figura es Simón Bolívar. Contribuyó de manera
decisiva a la independencia de muchos países hispanos.

Procedures:

1. Pass around the money and allow them to look it over. Meanwhile,
place the country cards around the room.
2. Now ask the class where they would like to travel and give them the
money accordingly.
3. Students should “travel” to their country and take turns playing the
roles of dependiente y cliente, using the provided receipts.
4. Students should make at least 3 purchases of over 100.
5. Afterwards, students from each country should come up with one
“skit” to present to the class.

Adaptions: Heritage Language Learners should draw up contracts to sell to


the vendors. In the end, have the students sell a credit card to the class. The
HLL with the most clients wins and does not have to complete the webquest.

Assessment/Homework:
Homework-Have the students complete the “De Compras” webquest. Go
over the questions as a class.

Assessment- Jot down what the students are wearing as they walk into
class. Dictate as description and have the students identify their classmate.
