Assignment #1 Solution

This document contains the solutions to 5 problems involving static equilibrium calculations of forces and moments for beams and structures. Each problem shows the free body diagram, identifies the known forces and moments, then sets up and solves the static equilibrium equations for the unknown reaction forces. Reaction forces RA and RB are solved for in Problems 1-5. Problem 3 also solves for an unknown moment MA.

CVG 2140 Assignment 1 Winter 2014

SOLUTION
Problem 1)
10 kN

RA

RB

MB = (10 kN) (5 m) (RA) (8 m) = 0

RA = 6.25 kN
Fy = RA + RB 10 kN = 6.25 kN + RB 10 kN = 0
RB = 3.75 kN

Problem 2)
0.8 kN/m

10 kN

RA

RB

MB = (10 kN) (5 m) + (0.8 kN/m) (3 m) (6.5 m) (RA) (8 m) = 0

RA = 8.2 kN
Fy = RA + RB 10 kN (0.8 kN/m) (3 m) = 8.2 kN + RB 10 kN (0.8 kN/m) (3 m) = 0
RB = 4.2 kN

Problem 3)
0.8 kN/m

MA

RA

15
kN.m

MA = 15 kN.m (0.8 kN/m) (3 m) (1.5 m) MA = 0

MA = 11.4 kN.m (cw)
Fy = RA (0.8 kN/m) (3 m) = 0
RA = 2.4 kN

Problem 4)
10 kN

RA

15
kN.m

RB

MB = 15 kN.m + (10 kN) (5 m) (RA) (8 m) = 0

RA = 8.125 kN
Fy = RA + RB 10 kN = 0
RB = 1.875 kN

Problem 5)
10 kN

RA

RB

15
kN.m

MB = 15 kN.m (10 kN) (1 m) (RA) (3 m) = 0

RA = 1.67 kN
Fy = RA + RB 10 kN = 0
RB = 8.33 kN
