1. Identify Topics identify the topics that are to be discussed in class 2. Specify Learning Objectives tell the students about the learning objectives, what the students should know, understand, and be able to do with respect to the topic 3. Prepare examples and nonexamples be able to show, create, and find examples and nonexamples of the lesson being taught

The Open-ended phase Teachers present the students with examples and ask the students to make observations and comparisons of the examples 3. Closure and Application Teachers guide the students to a definition of the concept or a statement of the generalization, and the students apply their understanding in a new context
