Preparing the

Secondary Math Education Math Pre-Algebra Graphing Slopes Textbook and notes for assistance The Nebraska Standards website shows that students at the High School level should be able to identify the slope and intercepts on a linear relationship from an equation or graph. The also need to be able to represent, interpret, and analyze functions with graphs. The students are learning how to recognize what a linear equation looks like. They are learning how to find the main points of the line which will then allow them to graph the equation. The students will compete in a space race on Socrative online.A space race is a game built into Socrative that allows for students to use collaboration. They will be put into groups of about four or five students. They will work together and complete the short quiz about finding slopes and intercepts of an algebraic equation. As the students work together in groups, they will also be using what they know to compete against other groups from the class. We will use Socrative online. Students will need access to the internet. Students will need paper and pencil to solve problems before picking their answer. Students can use smartphones or laptops from the room. Objective 1: Students will have a better grasp on how to find slope and intercepts of algebraic equations. Objective 2: Students will get to test their knowledge by competing against one another during the space race. To prepare for this lesson students will need to have

knowledge of the prior lessons they were taught in class and know the basics of slope intercept equations. They will also need to know how to use socrative as they will be using this for a space race. Blooms Taxonomy Remember: Students will name and describe intercepts and slopes Understand: Students will discuss and predict answers to quiz questions Apply: Students will solve open-ended questions Analyze: Students will compare answers with each other. Evaluate: Students will justify the correct answer. 1. High school students will learn about algebraic equations and how to find the slope and intercepts from them. 2. Students will already have knowledge because they have spent time in class learning the information. 3. The teacher will have completed a Socrative space race online and will have it prepared for students to complete during class. 4. Students will get together into groups of four or five and collaborate with one another on the answers to the following questions:
1. What letter represents the slope in this equation - y=mx+b? a) y b) m c) b d) x 2. What letter represents the y-intercept in this equation - y=mx+b? a) y b) m c) b d) x 3. What is the slope for this equation - y=3x+5 a) 3 b) 5 c) 15 d) 2 4. Solve this equation - y=2x+7 (x=4) Open-ended

5. Once students have completed the answers to their questions and entered them into the Socrative system, the teacher will be able to designate a winner. 6. Students will be able to self-analyze their own knowledge of the subject based on how their group did while completing the space race. Measurement of Success on this project will be measured by how well

Success

students stayed on task during class. I will also look on their scratch paper and see if they word out all the quiz answers correctly their success will be measured by whether they showed the necessary work that was needed to solve the problems. How well they learned the information will be shown by what score they get during the space race. This lesson will be applied to other lessons because the students will need to know about slope intercept for the rest of this course. They would not be able to move on to more advanced lessons without this knowledge.
