BRANDEIS LESSON PLAN FORMAT Overview (brief description of students, subject, topic, and skills/concepts) - Description of Students o 21 Students
(2 IEP students 1 ELL student, two students with a shared aide, one student with an individual aide) - To figure out the direction of the wind, students are going to learn about the different cardinal directions. This read aloud book will introduce students how to use a compass, and to find the cardinal directions on the map. Understandings (What big ideas do you want students to know/understand and be able to do/have the skill at the end of this lesson?) - Students will be able to identify the four different cardinal directions: North, South, East, and West - Students will be able to define that a compass is a tool that helps people identify the four cardinal directions. Standards (What standards can you cite from CCSS, NGSS, MA History/Social Sciences Framework, other?) - Massachusetts History and Social Science Curriculum Framework o #5 under Grade 1 - Concepts and Skills Identify cardinal directions (north, east, south, west) and apply them to maps, locations in the classroom, school, playground, and community. Objectives (What skills and concepts must the students achieve in this lesson? To what degree? Think gradual release of responsibility.) - Through this lesson, student should be able to identify the location of an object comparing to another object. Assessment (What will you use to check for how well students achieved the objectives? How will students demonstrate achievement and understanding? How will they know that they have achieved their goal?) - Morning work will consist of students completing a cardinal direction worksheet independently. Instructional Approach. (How will you introduce topic, explain/model/guide skill development, provide activities for practice/application, and differentiate instruction? What is your allotted time for each step and your plans for closure? Sequence this section with #s.) 1. Use Iphones compass and show on the ELMO the direction for North. 2. Read a book called We Need Directions! by Sarah De Capua on the ELMO. Class will be able to follow along. Stop at pages that ask questions. Make sure that before you get to those pages, have sticky notes covering the answer. Have students raise their hands to answer the questions. 3. Have one student model how to tell which direction is North, and how to figure out East, West, and South. Give them a chance to use their arms let them know which way is East so they can try and figure out the other cardinal directions.
4. At the end of the reading, do a whole-class worksheet. 5. Doing the worksheet as a class will give student s a chance to practice. 6. Students will do the cardinal directions worksheets (a different one) for morning work the next day. Materials needed. (Just a list here is fine.) - We Need Directions! by Sarah De Capua - ELMO - Class worksheet - Individual worksheet for morning work
Reflection. (How did it go? What did the students do to show that they learned? What would you shift for next time? What will you do next with your instruction for this skill/concept? To complete after teaching w/ or w/out CT or FI.)
