Impacts of Climate Change

Higher temperatures result in longer growing seasons in some regions, increasing the types of crops that can be grown, like blackberries and maize in the UK and fruit, soybeans, and potatoes in Canada. However, fruits and nuts requiring cool weather, like apples, cherries, almonds, and walnuts in Yunan province, China, see reduced production, as does average wheat yield in Canada. Rising sea levels threaten over 600 million people worldwide living within 10 meters of coastlines, with 33% of coastal land and wetlands projected to be lost in the next century if levels continue rising at current rates. Climate change could lead to more insect-borne diseases by allowing insect populations like mosquitoes to thrive in

Higher temp result in longer growing seasons in some regions.

Advantages - Increase in types of crops that can be grown is The UK (blackberries & maize) - Production of fruit, soybeans, potatoes is projected to increase in Canada Disadvantages - In the Yunan province, China, production of fruits (apple & cherries) and nuts (almonnds & walnuts) are reduced as these fruits & nuts require cool weather conditions. - In Canada, the average wheat grain yield is reduced.

It is the increase in the mean height of the seas surface between high tide and low tide relative to land. - Higher temperatures cause the melting of glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica. The resultant melted water causes a rise in the sea level. - Higher temperatures in the atmosphere cause water in seas to expand, increasing the sea level. Over 600 million people worldwide live in areas less than 10m above sea level. Rising sea levels threaten low-lying areas and islands. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), 33% of coastal land and wetland habitats are likely to be lost in the next 100 years if sea levels continue to rise at this rate. Majuro Atoll in the Pacific Ocean will lose 80% of this land, if the sea rises by a metre.

Climate change could result in increased temperatures and rainfall in various parts of the world. Insects thrive in these favourable conditions, leading to the spread of insect-borne diseases. - Heavy rainfall may allow mosquitoes to grow in numbers in aquatic habitats, resulting in the spread of malaria and dengue fever. - Distribution of occurrence of insect-borne diseases is also changing. Regions with moderate temp (Europe, North America) are facing diseases once - Dengue fever was reported in the cool climate areas of Nepal and Bhutan for the first time in 2004.

It is a severe and rare weather phenomenon that results in significant economic losses and the loss of lives. [Heat waves, floods, droughts and tropical cyclones] The occurrence of extreme weather events has increased in the last few decades and is believed to be increasing due to higher land and sea surface temp. Higher temp results in greater amt of water vapour and latent heat in a warmer atmosphere. Such an atmosphere serves as a powerful driving force for extreme weather events.
