General Purpose: To persuade Specific Purpose Statement: To persuade my audience that fraternities and sororities are important to college. Introduction I. Attention Getter: What if i told you that all but three United States presidents since 1825 have been fraternity men. II. Speaker Credibility: Ive done extensive research about greek life on campus's, as well as I'm in a fraternity here at Purdue. III. Relevance to Your Audience: Im sure that there is a few people here today that are members of a fraternity or sorority, as well as Purdue is home to one of the largest greek life organizations in the nation. IV. Thesis Statement and preview of main points: Fraternities and sororities build you to be a better person, they help you develop strong friendships, better your academics, and build strong leadership. Transition: Lets get started by talking about how greek life builds life long friendship. Body I. Within each chapter, there is a close bond of friendship and brotherhood or sisterhood which only a fraternity or sorority can offer. As a member of the fraternity or sorority community, you will have the opportunity to meet students of various backgrounds with both different and similar interests. 1. No fraternity or sorority is made up of members that are exactly alike. B. The ideal of brotherhood and sisterhood is the principal foundation upon which each fraternity and sorority is built and from which you will receive the greatest benefit. 1. Every member contributes to this aspect. Brotherhood and sisterhood combines the concept of individualism within the framework of mutual cooperation. II. The academic portion of your college career is the most significant determinant in

your future success. A. One of the primary purposes of the fraternity and sorority community is to encourage and develop high scholastic achievement among its members. 1. Fraternities and sororities offer peer touring, upperclassmen counseling, and chapter study tables. 2. Some chapters also set academic requirements that need to be maintained in order to stay a member of the house. B. Within each fraternity and sorority there are members involved in a wide range of colleges and departments. This enables you to seek help from others who may be taking or have already taken the same classes. There will be upperclassmen who can advise you on which classes and instructors are the best within each field of study. The U.S. department of education data shows that just over 50% of students in college go on to graduate, however students that are members of a fraternity or sorority graduate and a rate exceeding 70%.Fraternities and sororities help you meet the challenge of balancing academics while gaining the most from your collegiate experience. Directional Transition: Now that ive informed you about how greek life builds friendship, and helps academically, lets talk about how it builds leadership. III. Fraternities and sororities are the best way to build leadership skills while a student at a college. A. Everyone in a fraternity or sorority is a leader, whether one holds a position or is just a participant the members will learn by doing. 1. Brett Dyess a journalist form Renaissance Development Partners stated that Financial management, conflict resolution, public relations, effective goal setting and basic democratic principles are everyday lessons for members (Brett Dyess). 2. These skills will help you in the university and throughout your life, A reporter from Northern Ohio University stated These days it takes more than just a degree to get a good job, it takes leadership experience. Many of our greatest leaders are members of a fraternity or sorority Nicole Glass a journalist for U.S. Today College stated 85% of Fortune 500 executives were part of Greek life(Nicole Glass). As i mentioned earlier all but three United States presidents since 1825 have been fraternity men. C. On campus, fraternity and sorority members have proven themselves as empowered, strong campus leaders. fraternity and sorority members comprise a large percentage of campus leadership positions such as Student Government, Orientation Leaders, Bruin Recruiters, Student Activities Programming Board, Sport Clubs, and many others. Directional Transition: Know that you know about the importance of fraternities and

sororities ill bring my speech to an end. Conclusion: I. Reiteration of the Thesis: Fraternities and sororities build you to be a better person. II. Summary of Main Points: Fraternities and sororities help build friendship, better your academic standing, and teach you leadership skills. Clincher: Fraternities and sororities have played a major role in the growth and development of the United States. The history of the United States cannot be told without telling the history of the American College Fraternity. The value systems of many of our greatest leaders, were shaped and re-enforced when they were members in greek organizations.
