Author: Madison Wharton Lesson Title: Beginning an essay with a strong introduction Suggested Grade Level: 6 Estimated Lesson

Time: 60 minutes Abstract: Students will identify the aspects of an introduction paragraph and construct their own introduction paragraph that is appropriate for a determined purpose and audience. There will be a powerpoint dissecting the elements of an introductory paragraph. The teacher will give an example essay topic and students will work with a partner to construct an introductory paragraph. The final task will be creating an individual introductory paragraph for an essay that will be graded at the end of the essay unit. Student Prior Knowledge: Students are able to write in complete sentences and have a basic understanding of the structure of an essay. Students will be able to do part of the assignment with a partner and the final assignment with notes from class. Standards: LACC.6.W.2.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 13 above.) Goals: Students will identify aspects of an introductory paragraph and how to construct one for a final essay assignment. Students need to have this skill for writing essays. Understanding how to address specific audiences and craft a thesis statement is a skill that students will need in their future. Learning Objectives or I can statements: I can write an introductory paragraph including a thesis statement and support. I can begin any essay with this format and create an organized essay. To learn this I will learn about the key components of an introductory paragraph (teacher powerpoint) and then work with a partner to create a sample introductory paragraph. After this practice I will begin to write my own introductory paragraph for the final essay assignment.

Procedures: 1. You/Students answer review questions from previous days lesson. (5 min)

2. Students listen to an example of a strong introductory paragraph and comment on their initial feelings and why it was an effective paragraph. (10 min) 3. We/Class read and discuss a powerpoint discussing the main features of an introductory paragraph. (15 minutes) 4. I /teacher give an example prompt and students work in pairs to create their own introductory paragraph and share with the class. (15 min) 5. You/students independently work on introductory paragraphs for final essay. (rest of class) Assessment: I/Teacher will observe during class time students efforts and the final assessment will be the final essay grade. Extensions and Adaptations: Sue: Sue has Attention Deficit Disorder: I will seat Sue towards the front of the classroom and will give her the opportunity to take a break to walk to the water fountain. I will also implement using a timer for certain tasks so that Sue will have a set time to focus on her assignment and then will be able to change the timer to 2-4 minutes and take a break after the initial timer. I will also ensure that I use clear, concise directions that are repeated twice and are included in the powerpoint to ensure the student understands the task. Tom: Tom has Dyslexia: I will ensure that for this student I will simplify the instructions and I will repeat them twice. I will also have a simplified version of the lecture notes available for this student if needed in handout form and on the class website. I will also create screencasts for online assignments or tasks so that Tom and other students can hear me explain it while viewing it. This will help students such as Tom that are challenged by simply reading directions. English Language Learners: Maria: I will make sure that visual aids are included alongside instruction in the powerpoint. Stephanie: I will give her the opportunity to work with a buddy who can help explain the tasks. I will also give her access to an online translator for writing her paragraph. Reflections: N/A
