Four Steps: Identify Topic- Your topic should be more complex and abstract than teaching a concept. Specify Learning objectivesYou want your student to acquire facts and you also want them to develop problemsolving skills Identify Problems-Choose problems with enough background knowledge for the students to develop strategies for solving them Access Materials-provide your students with the necessary materials to develop a strategy and solve the problem
4 phases: Phase 1: Review and present the problem- The teacher reviews the knowledge needed to solve the problem and presents the students with a specific, concrete problem to solve Phase 2: Devise a strategy-The students devise a strategy for solving the problem, and the teacher gives them feedback about the strategy. Phase 3: Implement the strategyStudents implement their strategies as the teacher more carefully monitors their efforts and provides feedback Phase 4: Discuss and evaluate results- The teacher guides a discussion of the students efforts and the results they find
Teachers can assess this model in traditional ways with quizzes and exams or with written assignments. Teachers can also assess student learning by monitoring discussions within groups and by evaluating students problem solving strategy and results. Students are motivated by the working with other students and by the drive to solve the problems. This model can be adapted to include technology to present engaging and real-world problems.
