Direct Instruction a model that uses teacher demonstration and explanation combined with student practice and feedback to help students acquire well-defined knowledge and skills needed for later learning
Its important to know: students learn by teachers first modeling and assisting before the students perform the skills alone
Four Steps Identify Topics- this model is best for teaching procedural skills Specify learning objectives- identify specific learning objectives that students are expected to master Select examples and problems- find or create high quality examples to help students learn
Phase 1: Introduction and ReviewThe teacher introduces the lesson and reviews prior understanding Phase 2: - Presentation- The new skill is presented explained and illustrated with high-quality examples. Phase 3: Guided practice- Students practice the skill under the teachers guidance Phase 4: Independent PracticeStudents practice the skill on their own.
Students are motivated by the challenge of problem solving and by the reward of student success. This model can be adapted by including technology in the lesson to both motivste students and to increase information gathering.
This model can be assessed by monitoring students problem-solving techniques and skills, and by giving written quzzes, exams, or essays.
