The Jps Weekly Issue 29
April 24th 2014 Jumeirah Primary School, Dubai Issue No. 29 - 13/14 Dear Parents, I am writing to wish you a warm welcome back to JPS following the Spring Break. I hope that you have all had an excellent time and that you have returned refreshed. I was fortunate enough to visit England in the first week of the break and spent time with my family; in the second week I spent my time working on a GEMS project with Stephen Chynoweth, my predecessor at JPS, and Catherine McKeever, who will take over the reins from me in September. I think that we made a pretty good team together! When I reflect on last term, I think of many great JPS events, including the wonderful Spring Fair which was led and organised by the PTA. I know that I really enjoyed it as I have each of the three years that I have been here. The term finished with the fantastic Year Six show which, as always, was led by Mrs. Deborah Bannister, Mrs. Maryellen Scribner and the Year Six team. As one parent wrote, To conjure that level of performance from 10 and 11 year old children is truly staggering, never mind the imagination, energy and musical skill also brought to the show. Thank you to all of you for giving us such wonderful children to work with! We are, of course, moving into the hottest time of the year and that is why I am urging all parents to provide their children with appropriate protection with sun hats and sunscreen applied before school, as well as a small bottle of still water that can accompany your child in their lessons. It is extremely important that we work together to ensure the children are properly hydrated. I look forward to meeting many of you over the forthcoming term at the numerous events that will be happening. I wish you and your families the very best in all that you do. Very best wishes, Chris McDermott Principal/CEO.

Temperatures have started to soar again. Please can you stress to your children the importance of keeping hydrated water, water, water!! We have already noticed an increase in sore tummies and headaches, usually caused by dehydration. Also, dont forget to apply sun cream in the mornings before school and remember NO HAT, NO PLAY
A QUICK REMINDER PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CHILDREN TO BRING THEIR MOBILE PHONES TO SCHOOL
15 of our Year 6 students attended the World Scholar's Cup on the weekend of April 4th and 5th, at GEMS World Academy. They were involved in many activities including debating, writing, quizzes - all against secondary students! The highlight of the weekend was when they discovered that 12 of them had qualified for the global round in SINGAPORE!! Well Done to all 15 students, who were great ambassadors for JPS. All of you should be very proud of your achievements.
Helen Green Gifted and Talented Leader
Year 6 performed for the very last time as JPS primary students at the end of last term, and what an amazing production it was! Well done to all the actors, singers and backstage workers.
MARY POPPINS!
A very big Thank You to Deborah Bannister, Head of Music, who, as always, choreographed an amazing show and was ably assisted by Mary Ellen Scribner and the entire Year 6 team of Teachers and Teacher Assistants.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Tim Hortons for their wonderful donation of hot chocolate, many different coffees, yummy cookies, delicious timbits, scones and doughnuts on the Mary Poppins performance evenings. The photographs taken by Stu Williamson Photographers will be on display in reception from next week, and the DVD orders will be sent home shortly

MIXED TAG RUGBY TOURNAMENT
In the last week of term, boys and girls from Year 4, 5 and 6 took part in a mixed tag rugby tournament. It was a great afternoon for all our rugby enthusiasts! Both boys and girls displayed fantastic skills, playing tough and challenging games against each other. The highlight of the day had to be the participation from the girls. Our girls at JPS have been playing Rugby the last two terms by the second term, they were moving into contact Rugby. They have committed themselves to learn the skills of this sport despite the absence of competition. I have been so proud of the girls passion and motivation to learn the game; some of them are now moving forward with rugby, joining local rugby clubs soon to be local Rugby Stars! During the tournament, the girls proved that they are just as good as the boys, with speedy footwork, slick passing, quick decision making and strong defence. In fact they definitely impressed and shocked many of the boys! Overall, the standard and level of Rugby displayed at this tournament was excellent - A massive Well Done to all those who took part.
