When logging into OBIEE, users see an error indicating a socket communication error. This is caused by not enough connections being set in the maximum connections parameter. The solution is to clear connections by stopping and starting the BI Server and Presentation Server. The number of minutes set for connection expiration in the instanceconfig.xml file should also be increased.

Checked for relevance on 01-Dec-2011

Symptoms
When you log into OBIEE, it appears to hang. Looking in NQServer.log, you can see the following error:

[nQSError: 12002] Socket communication error at call=recv: (Number=10004) A blocking operation was interrupted by a call to WSACancelBlockingCall

Cause
There are not enough connections set in Maximum Connections.

Solution
Clear the connections by stopping and starting the BI Server and Presentation Server. Edit instanceconfig.xml and increase the number of minutes set for the 'ConnectionExpireMinutes'. The default value for this parameter is '3' minutes if no setting currently exists. Try a larger number. For more information, see the section 'Setting the Time to Expire for Idle Oracle BI Presentation Services Client Connections' on page 22 of the Oracle Business Intelligence Presentation Services Administration Guide Version 10.1.3.2 December 2006.
