Reliability Related Problems

The document discusses reliability problems related to vehicles and equipment. It contains 5 problems asking the reader to calculate probabilities of failure or survival for systems with multiple independent components operating in series or parallel, given mean times between failures or reliability values for each component. It also asks the reader to calculate warranty failure percentages and required average life for a specified number of failures.

Problem 1 & 2

A car has four independent and identical tyres. If any one of these tyres flattens then the car cannot be driven. Calculate the probability of the car failing to operate due to a flat tyre. Also if the reliability of each tyre is 0.9, what is the reliability of the car wrt tyres?
An aircraft has three independent engines that function simultaneously . At least one engine must operate successfully. If the reliability of each engine is 0.8 calculate the probability of successful aircraft flying?

Problem 3 & 4

Calculate the probability of an equipment that is to operate for 500hrs which has 4 sub assemblies in (a) serie (b) parallel, having MTBFs as S1 = 5000hrs, S2 = 3000hrs, S3 = 15000hrs and S4 = 15000 hrs.
An equipment is to operate for 5000hrs. Failure rate is estimated as one in 50000 hrs. Find the probability of survival.

Problem 5
A particular brand of handheld computers fails following an exponential distribution with a mean of 54.82 months. The company gives a warranty for 5 months. (a) what percentage of computers will fail within the warranty period? (b) If the manufacturer wants only 85 of the computers to fail during the warranty period, what should be the average life?
